Don't Fall for the "Build an App in 5 Minutes" Scam

Don't Fall for the "Build an App in 5 Minutes" Scam! My Half-Year Love-Hate Relationship with Cursor, and the Real Truth...

You've seen those posts, right?

"Develop an app in 5 minutes!"

"Zero coding? Cursor is insane!"

"Programmers are done for!"

Honestly? I got roped in too.

That first night, after installing Cursor, I sat there watching it spit out code line by line, my hands actually trembling. This thing was about to kill the programmer's job for real.

But you know what? After half a year of using it, building a few projects that actually ran, I want to lay it all out—the stuff nobody tells you, the mistakes I made, the things I figured out.

So how did it break out?

Let's go back to 2023 for a second.

Back then, GitHub Copilot was already solid—$100M ARR. Backed by Microsoft, using OpenAI's models, running on their own VSCode. On the other side, ChatGPT, Claude, Replit were all competing for regular users—people writing one-off scripts, throwing together demos, it felt fine.

Then Cursor showed up.

And what did it do? It took Microsoft's open-source VSCode, hacked it, and called the same OpenAI models that Microsoft had deep ties with.

You'd think that's asking for trouble, right?

But after watching a few interviews with the team, I realized they actually knew exactly what they were doing.

First, the positioning. They only serve professional developers. They don't compete with ChatGPT, v0, Bolt. If you can't tell the difference between a chat and an editor? Sorry, you're not their user. Harsh, but it kept the product focused.

Second, they understood "writing code" at a deeper level than Copilot. Back then, all AI coding tools were about autocomplete—you write half, it finishes. Cursor's idea: coding is really about editing. Deleting the old, putting in the new. This insight sounds simple now, but nobody else was doing it. That's why
